I bought 10 straws of a polled Saanen buck last summer, intending to use it to practice AI. He was found in a tank of otherwise Nubian semen, had a stellar pedigree...and despite the owner having taken the time to collect him, absolutely no registered offspring. I could find no pictures of his dam, but the description in a Tim-Tam sales List was promising. I selected a doe I thought could balance out the typical weaknesses of the Saanen breed and when she came into heat, I attempted to AI her. My technique was awful...got the straw thawed and loaded, and then the doe would jump, knocking the gun and straw out of my hands... It took several tries to keep everything in the doe, and by then I was certain that I would be rebreeding in three weeks. At two weeks post breeding, I began looking around for a backup. Both of my other AI attempts came back into heat, so I got another buck lined up for Chante'. Three weeks rolled around...not a peep. After four weeks I felt pretty certain that she was bred (boy, that semen must have been tough!). Five months later, and I came out to find her having kidded five days early...and the kid was light gold. Oh crud! Did I have a fence breeding with the leased Guernsey buck???? Once he was dry though, he appeared to indeed be polled. Polled is a dominant gene, meaning that one parent must be polled in order for any of the kids to be polled. Supposedly there is a recessive polled gene in Guernseys...but that would require the dam to have a recessive polled gene for Chante' to have put out a polled kid.
As he's grown, the Saanen genes appear to have overpowered all of the Nubian - even his disposition - except for his darling airplane ears and his color (gold cream). He looks just like some of those uber-dairy des Ruhigestelle does - extremely sharp and angular, correct across that topline and with a long bone pattern. His shoulder assembly is vastly improved over the previous generations, and his withers are already very sharp and correct. I sure wish he was a doe, as I'm so curious about the udder genetics behind him. I'm keeping him intact to breed to a couple does to see what he throws, and I will definitely try the sire again...but on a much more powerfully built doe!!
He is polled, so if you are looking for exceptional dairy genetics and the polled gene and you don't need purebreds, this guy is your ticket. I am offering him for stud and I recommend breeding him to a wide, strong doe.
Stud fee: $30 w/memo, $20 w/o memo
